Rhenus Group is advancing a trimodal container terminal project at the Port of Aktau. The company and Aktau International Sea Trade Port signed an agreement defining the next stages of the project, while Rhenus is working with Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) on capacity development along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. The agreement was signed at the German–Kazakh Economic Forum in Berlin.

Under the current design, the terminal will connect sea, rail and road transport on a site of at least 30 hectares and add at least 150,000 TEU of annual handling capacity at Aktau. Next steps include an analysis of expected cargo flows and an assessment of technical and economic feasibility; the project is at the preparation stage.

Earlier in 2026, Rhenus acquired a rail-connected terminal near Almaty offering container depot, bonded storage and block train handling. For project shipments across the Caspian, added handling capacity at Aktau widens multimodal options on the China – Kazakhstan – Caucasus – Türkiye route.
