Aral–Caspian highway: −1,000 km toward Aktau and Kuryk

On 3 August 2026, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev launched construction of the new Beineu–Saksaulsk highway — about 800 km. He proposed calling it the Aral–Caspian Highway: from the Aral area west into the road network that feeds Aktau and Kuryk. Completion target: no later than 2029.

Official framing: the road will more directly connect China-border checkpoints with Caspian ports; China–Europe freight distance falls by about 1,000 km, delivery time by up to three days. Parallel work expands Kyzylorda–Saksaulsk and Ulgaysyn–Saksaulsk; the three projects total about 1,574 km. Authorities expect annual freight on these routes to rise 2.5× to 13.2 Mt.

International lenders are in the mix (EBRD/World Bank and partners): EBRD’s ~161.5 km section is in procurement; the EU also backs preparatory work on Beineu–Saksaulsk modernization and Aktau improvements.

For OOG the takeaway is plain. A shorter map is not a clear run. While the road is built, lowbed (5- and 10-axle) and curtainsider road train moves still hit bridge ratings, width and axle limits. The project-cargo win arrives when the new corridor gives a predictable profile to Kuryk/Aktau and the Caspian ferry queue does not eat the days saved. Otherwise the −1,000 km stays Middle Corridor marketing.
