5 Mt on the Middle Corridor vs EU billions: the pinch is the Caspian

  • Middle Corridor
  • Caspian
  • EU
  • OOG

The European Post (12 Sep 2026) marks the gap between strategy and physics. In its most recent full year the Middle Corridor moved roughly 5 million tonnes and about 77,000 containers — while European ambition runs an order of magnitude higher. Aktau and Kuryk together handle about 21.6 million tonnes of nameplate annual throughput; the pinch is ferries, loading windows and Caspian weather. The corridor’s ~6,500 km without Russia remains a strategic asset; capacity still follows the slowest link — the water.

Capital is already moving: the EU Global Gateway package of about €12 billion for Central Asia; separately about €10 billion from European and international financial institutions; in August the Commission launched a connectivity platform via the Black Sea and South Caucasus (~€2 billion aimed at that stretch). On the Kazakhstan side: an IBRD $846 million guarantee underpinning about $1.4 billion of commercial financing for KTZ (February 2026), tied to operational reforms at the Caspian ports.

For OOG the cue is simple. Track and terminals speed a container string; a transformer on ten axles still hits the ramp, the axle rule and the ferry date. Build a Caspian buffer and do not confuse nameplate port capacity with a slot for OOG.

Corridor money is already there; an OOG slot still has to be earned.
